The Bridal Hair Trial Checklist for Hot Springs Brides
The trial appointment is the most important hair appointment you will have before your wedding — more important than the wedding day itself, in a way. It is the one chance to experiment, adjust, disagree, and refine without a ceremony starting in two hours.
After 24 years of bridal work, Brenda Lee has seen what separates brides who walk out of their wedding morning glowing from brides who were quietly unhappy but didn't want to say so. Almost always, the difference comes down to how well they used their trial. This checklist covers every step.
Before the trial: what to bring
Inspiration images — the right kind
Three to five photos is plenty. More than that creates noise. Bring one image that shows the overall vibe (romantic, structured, bohemian, sleek), one close-up of a texture or detail you want to replicate, and one image of what you do not want — this last one is underrated; it tells your stylist where your hard limits are.
Your accessories — every single one
- Veil (the actual veil, not a placeholder)
- Headpiece, tiara, or crown if wearing one
- Hair pins, combs, or clips that will be in the style
- Fresh flowers or floral pins if part of your look
- A photo showing your dress neckline if the dress isn't with you
Veil placement cannot be finalized without the actual veil in hand. If you plan to remove the veil after the ceremony, discuss exactly where it pins and how it releases cleanly without disturbing the style.
The right hair condition
Wash your hair 24 hours before the trial, not the morning of. Arrive with clean, dry, product-free hair — no leave-in, no heat protectant, no dry shampoo already in. If you wear extensions, wear them exactly as you will on the wedding day.
During the trial: what to do in the chair
Watch the process, not just the result. Notice which sections are pinned versus wrapped and how the foundation is built — it helps you describe what to recreate later. Take photos from every angle (front, both sides, back, three-quarter) in natural light if you can.
Wear the style for at least two hours — don't take it down the moment you get home. You need to know: does it feel heavy or pull? Does it shift when you hug someone? Can you sit in a car without crushing the back? Does the veil feel secure? Any discomfort after two hours is a real problem — note it and report back.
Questions to ask before you leave
- What products will you use on the wedding day?
- How should I prep my hair the morning of?
- If I want a small change, what's the best way to tell you before the wedding?
- What's the timing allowance for my style day-of?
After the trial: what to decide
Within 48 hours, decide one of three things: love it (lock it in), minor adjustments (text the specific changes — "slightly lower chignon, looser face-framing pieces"), or major rethink (book a second trial — not a failure, exactly what the system is for).
Do not fall into the "it was fine" trap. Fine is not good enough for your wedding morning. If something was off, name it. Brenda has heard every note in 24 years and worked through all of them.
When to schedule the trial
The ideal window is 4–8 weeks before the wedding — close enough that the memory stays fresh, far enough that you have time for a second appointment. Avoid scheduling more than three months out; hair texture changes, and Hot Springs humidity varies dramatically by season.
Frequently asked questions
How long does the trial appointment take?
Plan for 60–90 minutes for the bride. This is not the time to rush — the point is to slow down and make decisions.
Do bridesmaids need trials?
Usually no — unless a bridesmaid has a complex style, extensions, or a significant texture challenge. Most bridesmaid styles can be executed reliably day-of from the reference photos.
What if my hair has changed since I booked?
Tell Brenda before the trial. Cut, color, extensions added or removed — any of these change what styles are possible. A five-minute heads-up prevents surprises.
